I agree with Daioni. The following site confirms this and also says that The Pope was a keen skier.

There is an urban myth that Pope John Paul II played rugby for Poland: This rumour was apparently started by a 1995 Rugby World Cup program. It maintains that he played for Poland, but the official Vatican web site has (or had) a questions and answers page that addresses this rumour. It says - in answer to a direct question about rugby - that as a youth he played soccer as a goalie. I have to believe the Vatican (in this matter). What's more, I have looked at a number of biographies and haven't seen any mention of his having played rugby.

Are you sure that it was not a misprint and he often prays for Poland?
