When was the 'traditional' work week established, you know, the 9 to 5 Monday through Friday deal?

    Question #34752. Asked by Nay.

    rowan

In Australia, the first 8-hour day was won by stonemasons in Sydney in the 1850s. This was still over 6 days - a 48-hour week with Sunday as rest day. Other workers soon won these hours as well.

In the 1870s, stonemasons had further reduced their working week to 44 hours (half day Saturday).

In 1935, Queensland building workers achieved the first 40 hour week, 8 hours per day, five days per week. One newspaper editorial at the time described them as 'the apostles of laziness'.

No doubt, the workers of other countries achieved the 'traditional' work week at different times.
