When you snap your fingers, does the sound occur when your middle finger releases from your thumb, or when your middle finger hits the palm of your hand?

I agree with loiner. It is when the finger 'slaps' another part of the hand. It is easy to prove by just putting a finger from your other hand in the way of your 'snapping finger' and stop it hitting. If you do - NO SNAP !
