Why is it considered rude not to put the toliet seat down?

There's a good deal of sophisticated research on this topic. One of the most thought provoking of the many academic studies is at this site: http://home.sprintmail.com/~davekre/Sept00pg2.html However, having read dozens of these articles I have concluded that the answer is because my wife and daughters say so.

It is not a question of etiquette but compassion. If the toilet seat is badly injured and beyond saving then it is only right that it should be put down to prevent further suffering.

Well, SOTHC, someone must have put my toilet seat down because it smells like something died in there.
