    Question #34840. LEWIS CLARK asks:

How many miles are there from the most eastern part of the USA to the most western part of the USA?

    Friar Tuck

Only 2000 miles according to http://www.susancanthony.com/AboutAlaska/alaska.html

Alaska is immense, more than twice as large as Texas and larger than all but seventeen of the world's countries! It is 1,100 miles from north to south and 2,000 miles from east to west. Point Barrow is the most northerly point in North America. Pochnoi Point on one of the Aleutian Islands is the most westerly point. Because some of the Aleutian Islands are on the other side of the International Date Line, Alaska can technically claim the most easterly point in the United States, as well.

Doing calculations on my computer road map, if I were to start in San Francisco, CA (not the most western) and following Interstates to Lubec, ME (pretty close to most eastern) it comes to 3,442 miles. It's not straight line miles but close.

Probably less than 10 miles, considering that that the Aleutian Islands stretch across the International Date Line (or so it has been claimed). I have yet to find a map showing any Aleutian islands crossing the International Date Line, but I hope that someone can provide me with a link to such a map so that I can see for myself that Alaska does indeed cross the International Date Line.

    Andy,

The international date line does not go through the Aleutians. Why not? Becuase by international agreement, the line zig zags around the islands (and a number of others) so that one country cannot be in two different days at the same time. here's a link, but no map:

The International Date Line is not the definitive border between east and west - the 180 degrees line of longitude is. Therefore, the distance is around 50 miles i.e. between Semisopochnoi Island and Delarof Islands in the Aleutians.
