Sometimes my stool floats and sometimes its sinks, why?

Question #35210. Asked by student. (Jun 07 03 9:59 PM)

    Justin

When your stool floats, it means that it must be lighter than water and that it contains fat or a great deal of undigested material.

Since you (well, someone) asked.... If your stools float, that's healthy. It means you are eating enough fibre. If your stools sink, eat more beans!

what does fiber have to do with it?

Insoluble fibre that passes right through you is less dense than, um, the other stuff that makes a stool. And insoluble fibre is good as it apparently cleans your colon on the way through.

So floating stools are good - unless they are loose and smelly, in which case they may be floating due to undigested fats or gas bubbles produced by excess bacteria!

Are there any similarities in the origin of the word 'stool' as in footstool and 'stool' as in a bowel movement?

Galileo did not believe in the existence of atmosperic pressure. To support his view he would give the following reasoning. Imagine a container with liquid. Within the liquid consider a certain volume. The liquid inside this volume is acted upon by two oppositely directed forces: weight and buoyant force. According to Archimedes' Principle the two forces are equal. This is why the liquid is in {equilibrium;} it neither sinks nor floats upward. We might say, for example, that water immersed in water is weightless. How then can something weightless exert pressure on the underlying layers! Similarly air in air, being weightless, cannot exert pressure on the lower layers, and ultimately the surface of the earth. What is the flaw in his reasoning?
