'Leprosy' has become the accepted translation of what seems to have been a psychosomatic skin problem known as tzora'at, though it does not match the symptoms of leprosy (Hansen's disease) in many respects.
Miriam developed Tzara'as when she criticized her brother's personal life, in particular his separation from his wife Tzipora due to his intense involvement in prophecy.
