    Pardon my ignorance but what is ebonics?

    		Ebonics is the name given to the 'slang' English spoken by many urban blacks in the US. Recently, Oakland, California decided to formally teach Ebonics in their public schools.

    		It can be taught as any other language, dialect or jargon is taught. As an update to earlier posts, Oakland later rescinded its decision to teach Ebonics and reverted to a standard form of English. Ebonics was not a term in use by linguists. It struck some people as being a limiting factor in education - taking time away from more conventional subjects to teach something that would be learned outside school anyway. http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/bpl/weng/2000/00000019/00000001/art00002
