Where is Glastonbury Abbey situated and what was the reason this site was chosen?

    Question #35533. Asked by mochyn.

    Linus_337

Glastonbury Abbey is situated in Glastonbury(!) in sunny Somerset.

Built over a Celtic monastery founded in the 4th or 5th century and a Saxon stone church built in c.720, Glastonbury Abbey is the oldest Christian foundation in England. Prior to the Celtic and Saxon constructions, one legend says that Jesus built Glastonbury's first church of wattle and daub in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Joseph of Arimathea is also said to have planted his staff on the site, giving rise to the Glastonbury Thorn tree which, reputedly, does not grow anywhere else outside of the holy land.

Is that what you were looking for, mo?

    HI Linus
I was looking for the Joseph link but wanted the name of the hill it is built on .I would dispute sunny Somerset but you live there and I don't,I would agree with splendid Somerset as it is a beautiful place to live

It is traditionally the first Christian Sanctuary in Great Britain, visited so legend has it, by Joseph of Arimathea and Saints David and Patrick. Many believe that the Holy Thorn tree can be seen in the grounds originated from Joseph of Arimathea's staff and others are convinced that King Arthur was buried in the Abbey beside his lovely wife Queen Guinevere.
