The misnomer has been used in many websites such as
http://www.spacetoday.org/History/ManInSpaceFirsts/MoonDreams.html
which says:
First man-made Moonquakes: Apollo 14 astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell set off two small "earthquakes" on the Moon in February 1971 to be read by seismic monitors planted by earlier Apollo visitors.

According to NASA there are indeed natural "moonquakes" of several different kinds due to various factors such as meteorite impacts, seasonal temperature changes and gravitational effects caused by the proximity of the earth. These can reach 5.5 on the Richter scale and continue for some minutes longer than the average earthquake.

There are three types of moonquake:
1. Gravitational quakes, caused by the gravitational effects of the Earth and the Sun.
2. Natural impact quakes, which happen when an object collides with the Moon.
3. Artificial quakes, which happen when a man-made object collides or moves on the Moon. The first of these to be recorded happened on July 21, 1969 when an unmanned Soyuz probe crashed into the far side of the Moon, and was picked up by a seismometer that had just been planted in the Moon by Neil Armstrong a few hours earlier.
