Were Laurel and Hardy friends offstage?

McGruff, it is true that they didn't have a lot of common interests--Stan Laurel worked constantly (involved in the editing, gag writing, etc.) and enjoyed the production aspect, whereas Oliver Hardy looked forward to getting out to the golf course. However, they were very, very close. They became like brothers. After Hardy died, Mr. Laurel purposely never appeared in a movie again (in honor of their partnership).
