The Ghan train was so named in homage to the exploits of the Afghan cameleers.

It's known as the Ghan and got it's name from the Afghani workers who helped build it. They also brought their camels and some of these are now feral. However some have been "repatriated" back to Saudi Arabia as improved blood stock
