Is the symbol "$" specific only to US dollars?

I'm pretty sure it works for all dollars. I can vouch that it is the same in Canada

Hey on the 14th February 1966 Australia converted to decimal currency and guess what - it uses the $ sign too

The $ is not only used for US dollars. I am Canadian, and we use the $ as well.
