The question itself is a contriversy. There are two lines of thought and therefore two people who are called "The First Pope". The accepted oppinion of the Roman Catholic Church is that St. Peter was the first Pope and his authority came from Jesus, the Christ. In this case St. Linus was second. However, Christ gave authority to Peter to lead the Circumsized and Gave Paul the Authority to lead the Gentiles. So now we have St. Linus as the second Pope and St. Paul as the first.
The other theory is that the Roman Catholic Church was established when Flavius Valerius Constantinus known also as Constantine the Great, won possesion and rule of Rome from the Pagans and established the combined Church and State in 305 AD. He is recognized as the first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He appointed St. Sylvester I as Bishop of Rome from 314 - 335 AD. Todays Roman Catholic Church in an attempt to trace it's line of Popes back to Christ calls St. Sylvestor a Pope and traces back thru a line of Bishops. Before and after Constantine the great the Roman Empire was ruled by 3, 4 or 5 people simultaneously over different areas of the kingdom, each having equal power. Constantine the great was followed by his 3 sons, Constantine II, Constantius II and Constans I and they had their headquarters at Constantinople instead of Rome.. But they were Civil Rulers so we are still left searching for the second Pope. Following the first Council at Nicaea and the recognitian of St. Sylvester as First pope, St. Marcus I was appointed second pope.
