    1) a diningroom attendant who is in charge of the waiters and the seating of customers
    2) the pilot ins charge of an airship
    3) the naval officer in command of a military ship
    4) a policeman in charge of a precinct
    5) an officer holding a rank below a major but above a lieutenant
    6) the leader of a group of people; "a captain of industry"
    7) an officer who is licensed to command a merchant ship
    8) be the captain of a sports team

    Synonyms: chieftain, head waiter, maitre d'hotel, master, police captain, police chief, sea captain, senior pilot, skipper.

    Definition of Skipper:-
    1) the naval officer in command of a military ship
    2) an officer who is licensed to command a merchant ship
    3) a student who fails to attend classes
    4) work as the skipper on a vessel

    Synonyms: captain, master, sea captain

    It would seem from the above that 'skipper' is mostly used in reference to ships/boats whereas 'captain' covers a multitude of disciplines.
