What is links golf as opposed to ordinary golf?

Presumably it's golf played on a links course, which is one by the sea-side.

Links refers to the linksland between the sea and farmland. It was usually sand, loose soil with no trees, only small scrubs and bushes. The land was useless but perfect for early golf courses. A links style course has no trees and is usually hilly and sandy. Jim

I'll second that. On a golf links the term 'rough' really means rough. It's creeping willow rather than slightly less manicured grass. (I live within two miles of three championship standard golf links type courses... and used to play one of them in younger days.)
