Corruption of Deutsch, probably. The two languages are very close.

This word, properly meaning "Hollandish", is the M.Dut. Dutsh or German Deutsch, and formerly denoted the people of Germany or of Teutonic stock, not merely the Low Dutch or Netherlanders.
