Looking at a list of former US chess champions, I noticed Bobby Fischer was champion for a few years, then between it was Larry Evans, and then Bobby Fischer again. Did Fischer not defend or did Evans beat Fischer (which I find unlikely since I have never heard of Evans and the whole world knows Bobby Fischer as probably one of the best in chess history)?

Larry Evans is an International Chess Grandmaster, the highest title awarded by the world chess body. Larry Evans tutored Bobby Fischer from 1968 to 1972, guiding Bobby Fischer to his capturing of the World Crown in 1972. Larry has won the USA national championship five times and the USA Open four times and was a member of nine Olympic teams (including a gold medal team.) He has hosted ABC's Wide World of Sports and collaborated on Fischer's classic "My 60 Memorable Games." He also revised the monumental 10th edition of "Modern Chess Openings" and two collections of syndicated columns appear as "Evans on Chess" and "The Chess Beat." And in 1994, Larry Evans was elected to the Chess Hall of Fame! http://members.aol.com/dcpltd1/AOLWEBPAGE/FISCHER.html
