Hardy was born at Upper Bockhampton, near Dorchester. I'm not sure what's special about his birthplace (it was closed when I was last in Dorset) - maybe it's the fact that it was built by the family. He came from a family of builders and he himself qualified as an architect. Jul 21 03, 6:33 PM
