He was born at Lower Bockhampton near Dorchester.
The only thing I can think of is that his father, who was an architect or builder, built the house.

Hardy was born at Upper Bockhampton, near Dorchester.
I'm not sure what's special about his birthplace (it was closed when I was last in Dorset) - maybe it's the fact that it was built by the family. He came from a family of builders and he himself qualified as an architect.

I'm not going to dispute this with you ,Siskin,as I'm not an authority on Dorset but I thought his great-grandfather built it

Never will I answer Q's again when half asleep.
You're both right - I got my Higher and Lower's mixed up - and it was his grandfather.

Oh dear - great grandfather.
