The storm is like an eddy, therefore, although the GRS has a fairly calm centre, it does actually move.

But why doesn't eventually die down and go away like all of our storms do?

Because Jupiter's atmosphere is completely different than ours. The earth's storms are cyclic in nature. Rain, evaporation, condensation, rain, etc. Jupiter has no planetary surface, so that cycle will of course be different. Add that to the fact that the storm is the size of at least TWO EARTHS, and you might understand how it could last longer. The bigger the storm on earth, the longer it lasts, right? Also, most scientists do not think the storm is a permanent feature. It simply is long-lasting.
