Which sport has 39 that measure 42? (Hints: It is indoors; 39 of these make 1 which measures 42 wide.)

    Oh dear. Stumped City.

Are the 39 inches, which make up one yard?

    Jul 31 03, 3:13 PM
    mochyn

    I thought 39 inches make 1 metre

    Good grief, what a mistake-a to make-a.

You are right. A metre measures three-foot-three - it's longer than a yard, you see.

    Eh?

Mo, it's one of those cringe-making-but-effective rhymes which were made up to help people understand metrication and the equivalent imperial measures. Another is:

    A litre of water's a pint and three-quarters.

    I add another clue.
    The 42 is 42 inches.

You now know this then mochyn ?
Is there something you can give me that won't spill the beans for Linus just yet ?

    Jul 31 03, 4:24 PM
    mochyn

    Jul 31 03, 4:26 PM
    sequoianoir

So why the "ok Linus, the penny has dropped" or was that re Primrose ?

    Jul 31 03, 4:28 PM

    Jul 31 03, 4:50 PM

    sequoianoir

Never mentioned 1 lane bowling alley that I can see SM !

    Yo! Yo! Go Linus!
Yes - a ten pin bowling lane is 42 inches wide.
It is constructed from 39 Boards.
The 39 strips of wood that extend from the start of the approach to the pins. They are used as both a starting and an aiming point by players.
The boards are usually pine although the approach to the lane is made from Maple.
