    Shortest are 'a' and 'I'. I think there was a discussion on the longest word on here recently.

    The longest word is: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

    From what I remember (it was given as a random bit of trivia in my 4th grade general knowledge textbook), it's supposed to be lung disease.

    Here's a link which should explain more about the matter, I've just found out that the longest word is a bit of a controversy.
