    Question #36540. bluegill asks:

What shipwreck lost the most lives on Lake Superior?

    KIWI IN OZ

    The Edmund Fitzgerald

Just to add some info and in no way nibble away at Mochyn's lead on the frequent posters list.
One minute, the Edmund Fitzgerald was visible on radar. The next minute, the 729-foot ore carrier was gone. On Nov. 10, 1975, the giant ship mysteriously sank on a routine run from Superior, Wis., to Detroit, laden with 26,000 tons of iron ore.
There was no SOS call. There was no word why the ship, whose experienced captain had just radioed that Fitzgerald was "holding our own," abruptly vanished, killing all 29 aboard.

I'd like to add that there WAS a storm going on at the time. Another ship had been within visible contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald until the wind and spray got too bad. Ships sinking in the rather unexpected and strong storms common to Lake Superior are not at all uncommon in the history of Great Lakes shipping. So its not SO mysterious that the Edmund Fitzgerald sank, it just wasn't explained.
