Also known as the Boston Grid. Provides a classification of products in a company's portfolio. The products are classified according to market share and market growth rate.
Market share is used because it indicates the extent to which a product should be capable of generating cash and market growth is used as an indicator of the products cash requirements.
The four principal categories of products employed in the matrix are Star, Problem Child, Cash Cow and Dog. Some market strategists combine these four with three other categories; Infants, War Horses and Dodos.
