Who decides who will be knighted, and must you be a British citizen, and could you be a woman?

The Queen does I believe, yes you have to be British and I believe when a woman is made a Dame (eg. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith), that is the same as being knighted. Jul 28 03, 12:00 PM

On the whole you have to be a british or commonwealth citizen though you can be honorary knight like Bob Geldorf who is irish. Women become dames. Jul 28 03, 12:29 PM
