"I went back to the Devon School not long ago..." is the first line of what book?

Question #36956. Asked by HIPPIE- POWER. (Jul 31 03 7:35 PM)

I'm not sure what exactly your asking, but that seems like it may be the first line to "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles (I'm not sure, since I don't have the book with me).

Initially rejected by close to 30 publishers, this award-winning book was being challenged by religious conservatives long before J.K. Rowling gave us Harry Potter. Featuring a concept involving higher dimensions, the book begins with a line associated with bad literature and made especially famous by a certain comic strip character. What is the book, and why am I posting a question about it?

Do you remember the name of a book I read in high school? It had a girl in it named Meadow, a chapter about a Tastee-Freeze, maybe a kid that liked to take things apart and put them back together, and a radio show. I remember weird details, but nothing of substance, not even the main character's name! And I liked the book a lot, so if you have any idea what I'm talking about, please help.

"Not so long ago, a monster came to the small town of Castle Rock, Maine." To which book is this the first line?
