P&G (Procter & Gamble Co.) got into the peanut butter business in 1955 when it acquired the W.T. Young Co. in Lexington, Ky., which made Big Top peanut butter. In 1956, P&G introduced Jif, the best-selling peanut butter with sales of $286.5 million for the 52-weeks ended March 25, or about 33 percent of the U.S. market, according to IRI.
