When I was at school an idiot was often called a "divvy." Was this short for something?

Likely derived from "divot", meaning "clod". Nice and tame, calling someone a divvy is much on a par with telling them they are a pillock.

A divvy was short for a dividend, but this wasn't used in an idiotic sense. It refer to an inheritance.

Actually it sounds nicer than "pillock". I remember hearing that pill is an old slang term for the male member so a "pillock" meant a small one!

In the North East of England, I'm given to understand that Geordies with the broadest accents say "I divvn't na" to mean "I don't know".
"Divvy" could be a derivation of this, used as a term for someone who knows nothing.
