Is there any difference between a fiddle and violin?

    Question #37196. Asked by IndieQueen.

    McGruff

No, they are the same instrument. It is up to the musician which he or she wishes to call it. Personally, I equate bluegrass and folk music with the term "fiddle" and classical with "violin."

My violin teacher always said that a fiddle was just an out of tune violin. They are the same instrument, but the difference between them is usually considered to be the manner in which they are played. Also, as with any instrument, there is some variation in the style and quality of the violin, and fiddle players may choose their instruments based on different qualities than violin players.

Fiddle players use a lot of bending the strings, etc., similar to a guitar player. Violin parts are usually not written with that sort of openness, and require a more true tone. However, I've known a number of very good violin players who also played fiddle.

There isn't a difference in regard to the actual instruments, but rather in the style. A vioin is usually the term used when referring to classical music, while people tend to call the instrument a fiddle with bluegrass or even folk music (though this is technically not accurate), as McGruff was saying. Fiddling is also a verb, describing the style of playing.

Yehudi Menuhin was asked this once. His reply was basically that it depended what you played on it. Most violin players are classically trained and play from the dots. Many fiddle players play by ear. Most top violin virtuosi would be lost if asked to play in a performance with a village band in Eastern Europe, while the incredibly virtuosic village band would be lost if presented with the score of a violin sonata.
