EMI, which stands for Electrical and Musical Industries, records, manufactures, and distributes music and owns and administers song copyrights through its publishing arm. The company also has its hand in the new media pie, with a 40 percent stake in musicmaker.com. EMI’s labels include such big names as Priority, Virgin, Capitol, Blue Note, and Chrysalis, and it records and publishes artists including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Spice Girls, the Beastie Boys, Garth Brooks, Janet Jackson, and Ice Cube. It has had its PR nightmares, though, such as its association with the Sex Pistols, and EMI’s management has recently been brought under fire: The current CEO is known as the Biscuit Bungler, and one music industry insider jokes that EMI stands for “Every Mistake Imaginable.” EMI Group is the third-largest music company, behind Universal and Sony, and its announced merger with Warner Music promises to push it into the number-one position. The new behemoth, to be called Warner EMI Music, will represent 2,500 artists, release 2,000 albums a year, and own the copyrights to two million songs. http://www.military.com/Careers/Content?file=WF_emigroup.htm&area=Content
