It was rung in protest against British tax and trade restrictions, proclaimed the Boston Tea Party and was heard immediately prior to the first
public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

It also has an inscription which talks about Liberty, which made it very suitable to be adopted as a symbol of liberty.
