The most significant event in Berkeley Castle's history is seen as the murder at Berkeley of Edward II on 21st September 1327. Still shrouded in mystery, the event, although celebrated by many, represents a low point in the town's, and indeed the country's, history.

On April 3, Edward II was removed from Kenilworth and entrusted to the custody of two dependents of Mortimer, then later imprisoned at Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire where, it is generally believed, he was murdered by an agent of Isabella and Mortimer.
