How did the 'Jolly Roger' get its name?

    Question #38038. Asked by Flem-ish. (Aug 27 03 6:02 AM)

    shady shaker

Possibly a corruption of "Le Jolie Rouge", a soubriquet attached to mid 17th Century French
bucaneer Bartholomew Roberts. The name came to
symbolise the skull and cross-bones flag flown on his ship. Other possibilities are listed at
    www.autopen.com/jollyroger and at www.geocities.com/captcutlass/Flag.
