West Highland Whites and Cairns.
A number of different breeds were listed as Scottish Terriers in the mid 19th century, in fact the term Scottish Terrier simply referred to all the terriers from Scotland, and was loosly grouped into long-legged and short-legged. In 1883 the "Hard-haired Scotch Terrier" was established as its own breed. At that time, and up until 1917, West Highland Whites and Cairns were still grouped as Scottish Terriers. The fourth breed, which separated from the "short legged" scottish terriers group somewhat earlier, was the Dandie Dinmont.
In 1917 the Kennel Club of Great Britian forbade interbreeding of the Scottie, Westie and Cairn to promote the separate breeds.
