Scotties were originally bred to hunt and kill the various species of wildlife that made life hard for the Scottish farmer and crofter, including fox, badger, wildcat, weasel, otter, and rats. http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeds/scotties.html

Righto!
In fact, scotties were bred to "go to ground" and hunt burrows. This is why their skin, though not wrinkled, is loose on their frame, allowing ease of motion in case they are latched onto by prey.
Also why they can be lifted by their tails without pain. (When a dog's front half is down a badger hole, there are only so many ways to get them back out.)
