G'day Jug Head! I hope the following is helpful.
It appears that the first Spanish settlements started appearing in Central and South America from 1508 and were the basis for later Spanish domination of that area.
The first Spanish town in what we know as the United States was built in 1526 by Luis Vasquez de Ayllon. Named San Miguel de Guadalupe, the town was located somewhere between 30 and 34 degrees north. Trouble soon came in the shape of in-fighting by the colony's leaders, Indian attacks, a slave rebellion and the death of Ayllon. The town was abandoned and the survivors returned to Hispaniola (modern day Haiti). (See www.nps.gov/fora/spain.htm. For details about the first English colony see statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/ncsites/english1.htm.
