After winning the toss in cricket, what conditions make it advantageous to bat first rather than second, and vice versa?

The factors will be somewhat different for a 5 day test match as opposed to a limited over 1 day match. A couple I am aware of.

One consideration is how you think the pitch will last over the match duration - only really applicable to a 5 day test. eg. If quite badly cracked, with "sharp" edges to the cracks that are going to crumble with use, it is best to bat 1st whilst the bounce will be truer and less likely to variation in both height and direction. Making your opponents play 2nd and last (2 innings each) gives them the worst playing conditions as far as the pitch is concerned.
    Re the weather.
If it is cooler and overcast, it is much easier to get the ball to "swing" and turn in the air (potentially in both directions - into and away from the batsman) than when there is no cloud cover and the sun is shining. Given this, knowing that the weather will be likely to be better in the afternoon (for a 1 day match) or tommorow and/or the day after (for a test match) if might be preferable to bowl 1st.
