I think Jane Campion probably rates a mention.
Her films include "The Piano", "Portrait of a Lady" (based on Henry James's novel) and "Holy Smoke."

Yes, I was going to mention Penny Marshall as well, I believe she is the most successful female director. Penny's brother Garry Marshall also directed the movies Pretty Woman (the most successful movie directed by an actor) and Runaway Bride.
The most successful movie directed by a woman is Look Who's Talking, directed by Amy Heckerling.
The third, fifth, and eighth are taken by Sleepless Seattle, You've got M@il and Michael, directed by Nora Ephron.
I might as well mention the top 10 movies directed by women:
1) Look Who's Talking - Amy Heckerling
2) Doctor Dolittle - Betty Thomas
3) Sleepless in Seattle - Nora Ephron
4) The Birdcage - Elaine May
5) You've Got Mail - Nora Ephron
6) Wayne's World - Penelope Spheens
7) Big - Penny Marshall
8) Michael - Nora Ephron
9) A League of Their Own - Penny Marshall
10) Father of the Bride - Nancy Meyers

Mai Zetterling was the first woman to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar and began her career as an actress. But I guess she's not very well known.

Amy Heckerling also directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Clueless.
Mary Harron directed American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol, and The Notorious Bettie Page
Sofia Coppola directed The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette
Eleanor Coppola directed Hearts of Darkness
Julie Taymor directed Titus, Frida, and Across the Universe
Mira Nair directed Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, and Vanity Fair
Patty Jenkins directed Monster
Kimberly Pierce directed Boys Don't Cry and Stop Loss
Martha Coolidge directed Valley Girl and Lost in Yonkers
In 1976, Lina Wertmuller was the first woman ever nominated for an Oscar for Seven Beauties.
Jane Campion became the second female best director Oscar nominee in 1993 for The Piano.
Also, Loveleen Tandan co-directed Slumdog Millionaire, but received no credit for it from the Academy or from Danny Boyle (though Boyle did take the time in his acceptance speech to thank the choreographer of that tacked-on dance sequence).
