Constantine the Great was proclaimed emperor by his troops at Eboracum (York) in 306. He embraced Christianity in 312 after deciding that he owed victory in the battle of Milvian Bridge to the Christian God.
He had earlier served in the court of Diocletian, though, at a time when Christians (rather than Christianity) were being spread about the place!
