The Council detailed the specific beliefs of the Catholic Church, in order to emphasize what those beliefs were (as opposed to the beliefs of the dissenters in the Protestant movement). This included, among other things, specifying that the Old Testament books Protestants questioned (or regarded as Apocryphal) were canonical.
