Why do people engage in the ritual of "knocking on wood?" How did this superstition begin?

Question #38471. Asked by Hamlet.. (Sep 05 03 11:12 PM)

G'day Hamlet! In ancient times trees were considered to be the abode of the gods.
When someone wanted a favour they would touch the
tree (first knock). The second knock signified
"thank you" for the granting of the favour.
    That info comes from www.geocities.com/Athens/8999/Parthenon/superstitions.
