An oxygen atom has six electrons in its outermost energy level. Why must two oxygen atoms share four electrons when they form a covalent bond?

Question #38644. Asked by crmrealquick. (Sep 10 03 5:04 PM)

    Senior Moments

Oxygen atoms have 6 valency electrons and therefore require two more electrons to achieve the stable octet arrangement. Again a covalent bond is formed if two oxygen atoms come together but this time it is a double bond. Double because two electrons from each oxygen atom are shared.
