    ...or to answer the question, the two outer electrons of each magnesium atom will be attracted by the sulphur atoms to form positive magnesium ions (Mg2+) and negative sulphur ions (S2-). The resulting positive and negative ions will be attracted so forming what are called ionic bonds which hold the ions in a crystal structure. This structure will determine the physical properties of the resulting compound, magnesium sulphide (formula MgS as DB said).
