The modern day deck of playing cards is believed to have come from the tarot. The face cards of the tarot deck are the King, Queen, Knight and Page. Occasionally Knight and Page are also represented as Prince and Princess. In the modern day playing card deck the Knight was dropped and replaced by the Page, whose new name was the Jack.
In some languages the Jack's "social rank" was lowered to that of a "fool" or a "peasant".
