Why is a prominent person or someone under scrutiny said to be in the "limelight?"

Limelight is an intense white light obtained by heating a cylinder of lime in a oxyhydrogen flame, formerly used to illuminate the stages of theatres - so if you were in the limelight you were on stage performing.
