Hitler's Germany. The occasion (1934 I think) when all the so-called "weaklings" were purged from the Nazi party, leading to the rise in power of the SS. Many of those (predominantly SA members) ousted from authority that night were summarily shot, which should have given the world a clue about what was to come.
