People from many parts of the world like to think that their country is great but what countries actually have 'great' in their official title?

Question #38921. Asked by mochyn. (Sep 19 03 12:37 PM)

None that I can find unless you count Great Britian. But I'm not sure how you brits go about that. In the CIA's list of countries, it is listed as the United Kingdom. But I suppose many prefer to refer to the separate countries. Anyway, it is according to the CIA's current list of countries that I base my answer of none.

A quick skim through Whitaker's Almanack shows only one - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

But surely England, Scotland and Wales etc.. are countries and NOT the UKofGB...
From a sporting viewpoint, England, Scotland, Wales etc. field football, rugby and other teams or individuals in many european and world (country based) competitions.
The Olympic games being one of the few where they all compete as GB. (Reason that we don't enter a football team in the Olympics - no GB team - no GB FA organisation etc)

According to this list, Libya is the only one. Of course, I didn't see Great Britian on this list, either, which I thought was odd, it being a British list.
