If we were to replace Pompeii with a large metropolitain area,then I would have to say NO,as people would try to take possessions with them and this would lead to chaos ,gridlock.Like most disaster movies people are stuck in their cars waiting for the END

The recent eruption of Mt. Saint Helen's, which was HUGE, was predicted months before it occured, giving local people ample time to get themselves and most of their possessions to saftey...

There was an earthquake a few years previously which did a great amount of damage. People still chose to stay after that because it was the most important town in the area. This is a good site as it tells you that they did get out for the most part though some chose to saty, just as they did on mount St Helen.
