Herbert Hoover and Alf Strange were sons of blacksmiths. Is it anything to do with that?

Yay, Maggie! It took a bit of time but the founder of the Honda company, called Soichiro Honda (I think) was also son of a blacksmith, as was William Smith. Mr Smith is sadly little known but was the first man to make a geological map of the world. What is more, he did this single-handedly without much assistance. His story has been published in a recent biography whose name I have presently forgotten.
