I'm not sure but I think it might be the elephant, most likely African as opposed to Asiatic.

I always thought that elephants had special areas which they designated as graveyards. However, contrary to popular belief, elephants do not go off to die in special 'elephant graveyards'. They display a fascination with their dead, and will return to a skeleton and scatter the bones over a wide area.

The elephants walk among the bones, picking them up with their trunks, you might say 'fondling' the bones. Almost like they're identifying each one and passing on some sort of message, or at least soothing themselves by their actions.
